Name: Josef Kalüf / Age: 35 / Education: B.A. in Advertising and Marketing from Notre Dame University (NDU 2001) / Occupation: Independent Filmmaker / Passion: Defying Gravity / Previous Work: 3 Short Films & 1 Medium Length Documentary.
I started my journey with a short film that I’ve shot, acted in, and edited myself “Holiday in the Mountains” (2005). Afterwards, I’ve edited material from the making of a friend’s short film and made it into an experimental short “Higher State of Consciousness” (2005). Then, I wrote “The House that once was Home” which was filmed in 2007 and participated in the Cyprus International Film Festival (CIFF 2009). And lately, my 52 minutes documentary “Conflict 1949 – 1979” (2013), screened at Beirut International Film Festival (Beirut 2013), Sinemardin Film Festival (Mardin, Turkey 2014), Lebanese Film Festival (Special Mention, Beirut 2014), Faito Doc Festival (Special Mention, Naples, Italy 2014), and Document 12 International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival (Glasgow, Scotland 2014).
My short experimental film "Vacuum" is an essay, a speculation on my behalf about existence. It tackles the delicate subject of awakening to the reality of the unorthodox question: "WHY?"
When we read the giants of philosophy like Dostoyevsky, Sartre, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and others, we realise that all of them speculate upon the big question "WHY?"; Why do we exist? Why here? Why now? Why does humanity exist on earth? And all of them get to the inevitable answer, and here I paraphrase: If we exclude faith and belief in eternity, i.e. if we isolate religion, humanity's existence on earth is pointless. No matter what you do, no matter who you are, you are just a living organism doomed to annihilation, doomed to disappear once your cells disintegrate.
Now since I am a human being, one among the seven billion entities that exist on the face of this planet; and here I am not counting animals and plants, I am prone to question my existence and speculate upon the meaning behind it. So the importance of my project lies in the question itself, since it will not explore or offer any answers, it will rather make the audience think and draw their own conclusions.
What your contributions will achieve is help me make this film and pay a tiny amount of money to the crew that is going to be helping me put it into form.
What We Need & What You Get
Pre-Production: We need around $1,000 to audition actors for the role, make phone calls and prepare props for the set.
Production: We need around $8,000 to cover the cost of 2 shooting days in terms of paying little money to a minimal crew, the actor, studio rental, equipment and food.
Post-Production: Around $3,000 for editing, grading, sound design and mixing.
This campaign will hopefully allow me to achieve this short experimental film that will help open a door of speculation onto existentialism. "Vacuum" is a part of the process of illumination, that triggers thought in our Arab societies and communicates with the philosophical, critical, and analytical minds of the people.
If you cannot contribute with donation, you can still be helpful by sharing the project using the Zoomaal share tools and letting as many people as possible know about it. You can share with your Facebook friends as well, I am sure there will be many that care about cinema and would like to help in their own ways.
There are no updates for this project yet.
