Campaign unsuccessfully ended on: 07 Nov,2016
On November 13, 2016, G (a green NGO) will collect an estimated 55,000 plastic bottles from the 7 Km fun run and 5km run of Beirut Marathon. This is G’s 8th time leading the collection efforts; last year G collected 50,000. All bottles are donated to Arc en Ciel, an NGO that recycles the bottles and uses the proceeds to build wheelchairs for people in need.
Lebanon has been battling a severe waste problem over the past year. As most Lebanese have not yet embraced recycling, the majority of waste ends up in landfills across Lebanon. By supporting recycling at the marathon, G not only aims to divert 55,000 bottles away from landfills, but also to educate the 500,000 people running or watching the race on the importance of recycling.
Recycling Beiurt Marathon
G starts campaigning for recycling at the marathon in major schools and universities, as well as on TV, radio, and social media. During the marathon, G sets ups 8 different water collection/ cheering stations along the course of the race. Around 800 members of G will cheer for runners as they collect the water bottles in biodegradable plastic bags. All bottles will be then sent to Arc en Ciel for recycling.
In 2015, the 50, 000 bottles G recycled diverted 343.2 kg of waste from landfills, and prevented 0.57 tons of CO2 emissions. In 2016, G expects to recycle 55,000 bottles and prevent 0.62 tons of CO2.
There are no updates for this project yet.
