Feeling lost and don't know what all of this is about?

Keep Makan's Doors Open

As the political situation in the Arab world continues to be reshaped, open independent spaces like Makan Art Space that are dedicated to contemporary art and social practice are facing a crisis. Core funding for art spaces in the Arab world is scarce and with the cost of living in Amman continuing to rise, it has become a challenge to meet these rising costs and keep Makan open as an independent space for all.

Who we are:

Makan is an independent arts and community space in Amman. Opening its doors in 2003, Makan has played an integral role in fostering a thriving cultural scene both locally and regionally. Nestled in a small home in the heart of the city, it has welcomed cultural practitioners, multidisciplinary artists, social activists and innovators, and the general public.

For the last twelve years we have:

Produced numerous experimental contemporary art exhibitions and provided opportunities for up and coming and established artists to experiment and showcase their work. Some of these artists included: Annemarie Jacir, Anis Maani, Basim Magdy,  Basma Al-Sharif, Cecilia Mandrile, Corinne Silva, Doa Aly, Ganzeer,Hrair Sarkissian, Maha Maamoun, Mahmoud Khalid, Nidal Khairy, Oraib Toukan, Raed Ibrahim, Rheim ALKadhi, Saba Innab, Wael Shawky,Yazan Khalili  amongst others.
Makan has been unique in exposing Jordanian audiences to these non-traditional artworks.

Initiated residency programs like “Shatana” and  “The Young Artists Residency” that bring together local and international artists in a creative setting that allows them to brainstorm, collaborate, expand their network and practice.

Incubated and hosted several local social initiatives such as 7iber, the online journalism platform that initiated “The Hashtag Debates” in 2011 and Meezan who have created “The Freedom Machine” a sustainable greenhouse garden using the aquaponics system on our rooftop.

Engaged intentionally with the public sphere through public interventions such as “The Utopian Airport Lounge” curated by Juliana Irene Smith (2010) and “Chicago Boys” revival band lead by artist Hiwa K (2014).

And Many Volunteers & Friends!

Why you should back this campaign?

In 2015, Makan is creating a unique artistic program to include production residencies for young artists, multiple video art screening programs, reading groups and discursive conversations.  Makan will also continue expanding its network of artists and continue to be an independent art and community space. This is where you come in, your support will be crucial for sustaining the active role that Makan plays in Amman and the Arab art scene at large and will keep our doors open for independent artists, cultural producers and social activists.

Where your money is going?

Core funding, which is the backbone of making all of our programs and projects run smoothly, continues to be a challenge in the growing scarcity of funding we are all experiencing. Your contribution will go towards core funding and the sustainability of running Makan. We have successfully raised a third of our Annual core budget for 2015 from local philanthropists. We look to you, our extended family and community, to help us raise another third. Make a contribution today to our campaign and be part of this independently run incubator of art, culture and social change. Every little bit helps keep our doors open.

What people are saying about Makan?

“Makan is an integral meeting point of access for artist practitioners and various communities, or publics. It is a resource that allows processes to emerge and burgeon over time, supporting the regional art scene by bringing different voices into conversation. It is my hope that you will donate and support Makan to move forward into the next stage of its future.”

Omar Kholeif, Curator at The Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Senior Editor at Ibraaz- UK

“Makan is in essence an artist run space that guarantees criticality and freedom of artistic expression. It’s a harness for contemporary artists, writers and intellectuals. It is one of the few spaces of that sort- definitely in Jordan - but also in the entire region. I think for that reason on its’ own- the fact this place is making history- we need to support it with all we have."

Reem Fadda, Curator at Guggenheim Abu Dhabi - UAE

“Liberation in all its forms seems to depend on the existence of spaces where unlikely or unspoken ideas can incubate. Makan is one of these rare places not just in the world, the region, the country of Jordan or the city of Amman but also in the realm of the heart. Those beautiful people who have carved this space out over the years are social sculptors of immense virtuosity.”

Eric Gottesman, Artist- USA

“Makan remains one of the few safe spaces in Jordan that incubates creative cultural operators, artists, urban activists and thinkers. Since its foundation it has remained deeply committed to an interdisciplinary approach that places the arts at the heart of the city of Amman. For me Makan is an inspiring adventure because it is a refuge to so many young artists allowing them to create a community with each other and the world at large.”

Samar Dudin, Director, Ruwwad- Jordan
