The Imad Hashisho Music Program in Saida
Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa Association and Imad Hashisho’s family and friends announced the launching of Imad Hashisho Music Program aiming to teach the Oud instrument in the Saida region!
About the Program
The program focuses on teaching authentic Levantine music to students aged between 9 and 13 years old in the Saida region as there are no institutions and centers that teach this music genre. The program comes to fulfill the need of music appreciation and it starts by offering Oud lessons to three students from Saida for a period of two years. In addition to Oud lessons, the program provides lessons on the authentic Levantine music, the instruments of the Takht Sharqi (oriental ensemble), the history of music, and the Music Tradition of the Levant. The program aims to reach and include more students and to offer lessons on all the instruments of the Takht Sharqi in subsequent stages. This core program will be implemented for the duration of two years and aims to ensure long term sustainability and continuity in order to achieve its ultimate goals and impact.
This program aims to:
Authentic Levantine Music
It is the musical language of the Levant based on the transmission of Music Tradition from a master (al-morshed) in this music genre to a student (al-mourid) striving to widen his/her knowledge and become a professional musician. This music relies on improvisation, oral tradition, and harmony between the performer, the rest of the ensemble, and the audience. This modal music consists on the musical suite (al-wasla) and contains instrumental and vocal pieces performed by the oriental ensemble and its instruments including: the oud, the violin, the nay, the qanun, and the percussion. The singer performs the vocal pieces accompanied by the other musicians of the ensemble playing on their instruments and singing as bitana (back vocals). The ensemble might be extended to include other instruments.
Authentic music is not limited to a specific historical era as it is a continuous music genre that is innovated from the inside by creating new music forms or reviving older forms of the Levantine musical language.
About Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa Association
Established in 1955, Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa Association is one of the oldest associations in Saida. Since its creation, the Association aims to spread culture and knowledge among the popular social classes and raise awareness on rights and social issues. The Association carries out activities with social and national aims focusing in particular on youth. Moreover, Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa Association considers education to be at the heart of its work and objectives through offering tutoring and literacy classes. Over the years, the Association succeeded in developing and extending its scope of work, by organizing seasonal programs for children, including summer camps, activities, and Children’s Day celebrations. Furthermore, the Association targets women and youth through volunteering activities such as camps, awareness campaigns, debates, discussions, and seminars. Since its foundation to this day, Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa has relied first and foremost on the efforts and contributions of volunteers, an operational model relinquished by other associations due to the changes which distorted the aims and principles of social work.
Based on Article 3 of the Association bylaws, highlighting the necessity “to spread culture and raise the knowledge among the people”, the Association always works on developing its tools and approaches to achieve its objectives and purpose, and continues to seek new ways and methods to achieve them in light of social transformations and developments either in terms of issues or in terms of awareness and skills.
About Imad Hashisho
Imad Hashisho is a musician, Oud and Cello player, and Bitana performer. He was born in Saida in 1988 and passed away in 2018. Influenced by the singing of Sheikh Imam and Sayed Darwish and inspired by their music since his childhood, he grew up holding his Oud and breaking the academic teaching rules through his aural talent. As he grew older, his dream grew with him. He sought to hone his skills through the many people and friends with which he interacted and who were all taken and moved by his smile. They all helped him develop his passion and know more.
He influenced many people and was influenced by many including his mentors and musician friends. It is through these interactions that Imad and his music changed. He grew a persistent spirit that longed to uncover the aural heritage to create a new tune to the past, breaking all the rules. He remained himself: the same child holding his Oud wherever he goes, roving from one instrument to another, refusing to become an instrument himself, and continuously looking for innovation in various projects and bands be it authentic Levantine ensembles or other bands.
Imad is gone but his soul and mesmerizing sarcastic smile inspired his family and friends to keep his passion, perseverance, joy, and rebellious spirit alive by helping talented youngsters pursue their passion when they are not given such opportunity because their talent is either considered a mere hobby or a financial burden.
The Program is set to be launched in 2019 and shall provide weekly Oud lessons to three students from Saida and surrounding areas over the first two years at the Al-Adab Wal-Thaqafa Association center in Saida. Furthermore, the Program intends to organize regular meetings with groups of musicians aiming to teach students the history of Levantine music, the instruments of the Takht Sharqi (oriental ensemble), and the Music Tradition of the Levant. The Program shall subsequently offer lessons in other instruments to more students in other regions as well.
