This is a proposal by the Amman-based media NGO, Community Media Network (CMN) that aim at following up on issues dealing with the rights of the disabled in Jordan. The aim of the project is to raise public awareness of the existing legislation regarding the handicapped and to to take the issue one more step in investigating and exposing public and private institutions who clearly and publicly violate existing regulations regarding the rights of the disabled.
Existing international treaties and Jordanian law clearly provide a strong legislative protection for the rights of the disabled. The twenty fifth clauses in the Universal Declaration speaks clearly about the rights of the disabled as does the Jordanian law # 31 for 2007 regarding the need to provide easy access. Yet despite the clarity of the law, public and private institutes continue to lack the legally bound access. Hospitals, schools, ministries, banks and other institutes are often inaccessible to the disabled in clear violation of Jordanian law and international treaties and covenants.
