Campaign successfully funded on: 16 Aug,2016
Basmeh and Zeitooneh has launched its new crowdfunding campaign, #forthejourney, which will be raising money for three of our vital programs currently at risk. Why they are at risk? Firstly, because since its start, Basmeh & Zeitooneh has chosen to work in the most difficult areas where most donors are reluctant to get involved, and secondly because we chose to implement difficult programs that require a courageous leap of faith in the capability of the refugees to make themselves a radical change in their life.
The programs targeted in this campaign:
The programs targeted in our campaign each focus on a particular area of the journey that many refugees find themselves part of, from economic and social isolation, to active participation in their community. This journey starts from the provision of basic assistance for the most acutely vulnerable, continuing on to the facilitation of economic independence, and finally the reduction of social isolation. The corresponding programs are, respectively, Relief, Small Grants, and the Arts and Cultural Center.
Relief Program:Through the Relief program, we help the most vulnerable families – primarily those who do not have a source of income – to meet basic needs, from rent assistance to food baskets. We aim to relieve community members, who are forgotten by the big international relief agencies, of the financial pressure of accessing such resources, enabling them to focus on personal and professional development.
Small Grants:The second element of our campaign, the Small Grants program, is made up of two stages. Firstly, seventy participants, both men and women, are given training in small business management; in the second stage, forty of the participants are given start-up grants in order to put their small-business ideas into practice. Through this program, we seek to provide capacity building, financial support and job opportunities in economically deprived areas. This program is of a particular importance to the members of Basmeh & Zeitooneh, as a recent report published by Alef, a Lebanese human rights organization, shows that 70% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live below the Lebanese extreme poverty line. This program is our organization’s contribution in challenging this harsh fact, and give people who live below this line a chance to regain their dignity.
Art and Cultural Center:Lastly, we are looking to support the Arts and Cultural Center, which works to reduce social isolation among vulnerable communities, by providing opportunities for self-expression and creativity. The center provides a wide range of activities, from theatre to percussion groups, bringing people of all ages and nationalities into a communal cultural space, where social networks can be strengthened and creativity can thrive.
