Our program #childartist aims at offering arts classes in different disciplines (drama, painting, dance and music) to children from the impoverished neighborhood of Yaacoub El Mansour in Rabat. We believe that art can help this kids from challenging backgrounds acquire useful skills transferable to their daily lives.
Starting next year (fall 2017-spring 2018), our program will also include a street photography component where children will be initiated to this discipline and have the opportunity to expose in a local gallery.
The intended impact of our project:
Arts and culture are powerful tools that can help children develop life skills. The kids we work with are coming from very challenging backgrounds (migration due to conflict, violence, poverty...) and arts can be part of the solution to their daily challenges. It can help them channel their energy in a healthy way, express their frustrations and develop their talent. Our goal is to instill artistic sensitivity, tolerance and critical thinking but also develop life skills that will help the children we work with in their lives.
The challenges we have:
We currently operate our activities on volunteer basis. With this model, it is challenging to ensure that our volunteering instructors will show up at each of their scheduled classes. Consequently, we need to hire art instructors that will work with the kids on a constant basis to be able to truly achieve our objectives. We also lack equipment for our arts workshops.
Our overall goal of 9000$ will help us secure funding of our activities for the whole next school year. With this amount, we will be able to:
- Pay the arts instructors and grow the number of arts classes offered to benefit more kids
- Buy equipment (music instruments, art tools and disposal cameras for our newest street photography component)
- Finance the logistics of our cultural field trips (museum visits and theatre...)
- Finance costs related to a show at the end of the year where the children will have the opportunity to perform in front of their families
Ways you can get involved:
Beyond financial contributions that will be really helpful to run our daily operations, we are aware at ACIA that human resources are one of the most important inputs. If you can't contribute financially, you can still help us by recommending art instructors for the kids or active individuals that could get involved with us. You also can help collect used art tools (paint, musical instruments, or even books...). Other than that, your kind words of luck are dearly appreciated!
