Feeling lost and don't know what all of this is about?

The Cinématheque de Tanger, North Africa's first art house cinema and film archive, is also a pioneering platform for artists from across the Middle East and beyond. Over 10 years, the Cinémathèque has built a collection of short films, documentaries, experimental films and artist videos, scopitones, and colonial and post-colonial archives from North Africa and the Middle East.

This Film Collection of more than a thousand works offers Tangerines, teachers, artists, researchers, and filmmakers access to an extraordinary shared history.

What We Need

Today, the Collection needs urgent help, due to sub-par storage conditions, and limited accessibility for the users it is designed to serve. It needs a redesigned home, professional archival standards, and the infrastructure to welcome a broader public, so this heritage is preserved and shared.

The Impact

Our project encompasses the upgrade of storage facilities, improved archival standards, and increased visibility for the Collection through an outreach campaign.

The Cinematheque is a cornerstone of cultural diversity in North Africa and Morocco, and especially in Tangier, an area until recently abandoned by culture.

When we foster the preservation of the Cinémathèque’s Collection, and promote access to a film heritage in danger, we are also giving the region a window onto the larger world of culture, and forging lasting ties between the region and international players.

Implementation

The physical renovation of the Collection spaces will be overseen, and based on plans, by a Paris-based architect specialized in cinema spaces, Jean-Marc Lalo, who will contribute his work pro bono. http://www.atelierlalo.com/ The project will include wall and door upgrading, custom shelving and consolation desks, and environmentally conscious climate-control systems. The entire renovation will take approximately 2 months.  We work with top local artisans, craftsmen, and technicians who always offer the Cinematheque  favorable prices and service based on our valued role in the nonprofit community here.

"Open Doors” is an 18 month action plan to turn our young collection into a mature archive with a broad base of users.

This project will constitute a true pilot program for North Africa in terms of moving-image archiving, preservation, and cultural dissemination. The goal is to allow as many people as possible to discover and acknowledge this cinematic heritage. We are driven by a geographical and historic imperative: Everyone should be able to enjoy, celebrate, and maintain their culture.

The outreach project will target local, national (Moroccan), regional (Maghreb-MENA) and international actors in the archive space: filmmakers, scholars, researchers, artists, and for-profit archives who may act as intermediaries in making our Collection materials available on a paying basis.

Our team is uniquely placed to carry out the outreach project.  It includes Cinematheque Director Malika Chaghal and her team, as well as the Cinematheque's artist-heavy board, whose extensive international network is eager for access to the renewed archive.
