Feeling lost and don't know what all of this is about?

Dear friends of CILAS,

CILAS blends the liberal arts with Cairo’s rich and dynamic social context. The liberal arts are subjects or skills that are considered essential for a citizen to know in order to take an active part in civic life. The aim of liberal arts education is to produce a knowledgeable, articulate and virtuous person.

Liberal arts education recognises and exposes students to the different forms that good thinking, truth and evidence take. It nurtures a wise appreciation of the complexity of the world. In today's world, one needs to be able to interpret changing global conditions, mobilise resources effectively and guide teams of diverse people. Students at CILAS are challenged and supported to cultivate these competencies.

Offering a yearlong study programme, CILAS enables students from different walks of life access liberal arts education. It is located in Islamic Cairo in the neighborhood of Al-Ghuria.  In employing Discussion Based Learning and a student-teacher ratio of six to one, CILAS serves as a learning environment that is conducive to critical inquiry, self-reflection and civic engagement.

A young educational initiative, CILAS seeks to contribute to the reinvention of higher education. CILAS recognises the socio-emotional and not merely the individualistic character of the process of knowing. Upholding that self-knowledge is the highest form of knowledge, CILAS hosts a safe and socially inclusive learning environment  that is not so different from pigeon towers.

What We Need & What You Get

We need to raise ten-thousand dollars to complete our current academic year for providing the following:

  • Financial support in the form of need-based scholarships, i.e. for refugee and underprivileged students.
  • Financial stipends for teaching activities and administration of the year-long study programme.
  • Financial support for research on emerging modes of critical pedagogy.
  • Maintenance of our learning environment which is nestled in a historic part of Islamic Cairo.
  • Your contributions will help budget capstone projects for students to shoot and produce a short documentary, design and publish a journal or organise and host a conference.

The Impact

With your contributions you will:

  • Enable students from socio economically diverse backgrounds to complete a year long study programme in liberal arts.
  • Impart students with analytical tools and development theory to asses and address local development challenges.
  • Lend credibility to the project and help raise CILAS profile.
  • Support us in the replication of CILAS.

You can be a part of our journey in many ways. You can always contribute to CILAS by visiting us for tea and by attending our weekly public events organised on Tuesdays. If you need a new home for your books, dvds, furniture, rugs and so on, feel free to drop by and donate.

Please also support us by helping share our campaign video and like our Facebook page. We would also appreciate if you can help us get the word out and make some noise about our maiden crowd funding campaign. Please share widely.

Thanking you.
