Caritas Upper Shouf is part of Caritas Lebanon and works on serving the unprivileged in the society. Working in the Upper Shouf region, we discovered how much the Upper Shouf, a rural area, is in need of community projects. Many of our villages host elderly people who remain there because they are attached to their birthplace and fear the change or because they have no alternatives. Some of them are in dire need, not only financially, but socially as well. With no children or relatives to care and cater for them, they are doomed to end their lives alone, in isolation and sometimes in precarious conditions. Mothers often don't work or leave their kids to the tired grandmas because they have nowhere safe to keep them. Many of our youth are finding refuge in alcohol or drugs because they don't have healthy gathering places to blossom, get training, flock into healthy groups and channel their energy in productive activities. A community Center offering to fill these gaps may make a difference in their lives, empower women and youth and embrace, like warm arms, lonely elderly.
First, a survey was conducted in the Shouf region in order to get the feedback of the community, and based on this survey Caritas Community Center (CCC) will include: Caritas medical dispensary, a day care for kids which will offer job opportunities for women in the Shouf, day care for unprivileged elderly, a location for youths camps, an amphitheater and a conference room, and outdoors public spaces. The center will also host hiking groups that go to the Shouf for hiking events. A main aspect of the community center is inclusiveness. Unfortunately, many of public spaces in the Shouf are not designed to account for people with special needs like wheelchair users, people with hearing or visual impairments. CCC is designed to be accessible by all people.
Caritas owns already a 3024 m2 land, the architectural drawings are completed, and now the next step is to raise fund for building the community center which will be serving all the community. We hope you can support us and participate in having our dream come true! And if you can't participate financially that doesn't mean you can't be part of the project, you can help sharing our project via zoomaal and get the word out!
